President Obama Calls on Americans to Serve Unveils ‘United We Serve' Initiative to Be Led by Corporation for National and Community Service
President Obama called on all Americans to help in our nation's recovery by volunteering in their communities this summer in a video message released today by the White House and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
The President's call to summer service launches United We Serve, a sustained effort to expand the size and impact of volunteer efforts in addressing tough challenges facing the nation. The United We Serve initiative kicks off on June 22, and runs for 81 days through a new National Day of Service and Remembrance on September 11.

As the economic downturn drives up social needs and spurs an outpouring of volunteering, organizers of the 2009 National Conference on Volunteering and Service say this year’s gathering will be a watershed event in the growing movement to use service as a solution to national challenges.

The conference, taking place in San Francisco this June 22-24, will bring together more than 4,000 volunteer and service leaders from across the nation and globe at a time of strong momentum for service and civic engagement.

The Serve America Act goes into effect on October 1, 2009. To make the most of the historic opportunities provided by this legislation and to give us direction about where service should go in the next five years, we want to hear from those who know service best -- you. We also need your input as we develop the Corporation’s strategic plan for the next five years.
We will be spending the coming weeks and months planning for implementation, and are very interested in getting your input as we move ahead. We are sponsoring a number of opportunities for public input, including a new website for submitting your thoughts and ideas. > Learn More
