The grants being announced today are “new and recompete” grants, which means the competition was open to organizations that are new to AmeriCorps or are “recompeting” after completing one or more previous three-year grant cycles. The grants will fund recipients for three years, with second- and third-year funding contingent on performance and Congressional appropriations. Click here to read the full press release.
AmeriCorps continuation grants for 2008 were announced on March 5, 2008. These grants, which are for organizations that are completing their second or third year of their grant cycle, totaled $151 million in and went to 261 organizations to support 43,228 AmeriCorps members. AmeriCorps grants are made in two general categories: “state grants” made either to governor-appointed state service commissions or to organizations nominated by those commissions; and “national grants” made directly by the Corporation to organizations operating in multiple states, institutions of higher education, and American Indian tribes.
AmeriCorps State Grants
- AmeriCorps State Competitive Grants - New and Recompete: These 49 grants are awarded to organizations nominated to participate in a nationwide competition by Governor-appointed state service commissions. A total of $14,580,446 will be awarded in this category to support 1,773 members.
AmeriCorps National Grants
- AmeriCorps National Direct Competitive Grants - New and Recompete: These grants go to organizations that operate in more than one state. A total of $6,383,586 will be awarded in this category for 8 grants to support 1,260 members.
- AmeriCorps National Direct Education Award Program (EAP) Grants - New and Recompete: Under this program, organizations operating in more than one state, or institutions of higher education, receive a small administrative grant—approximately $600 for each full-time member—and most use their own or other resources to cover AmeriCorps members’ living allowance and other program costs. Six grants totaling $1,603,020 will support 6,427 members.
- AmeriCorps Indian Tribes Grants - New and Recompete: A grant of $125,946 in this category will support 10 AmeriCorps members serving with Santee Sioux Nation.
- AmeriCorps National Direct Professional Corps Grants - New and Recompete: AmeriCorps Professional Corps program engage AmeriCorps members in service where insufficient numbers of qualified professionals exist to serve critical needs. A total of $939,483 will be awarded for three grants to support 595 AmeriCorps members.
- AmeriCorps National Planning Grants: This grant for $45,489 provides one-year funding to help the Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation explore and demonstrate program viability. Since the grant is for planning purposes, it does not directly support AmeriCorps member service.
