AmeriCorps Week to Illustrate Impact of Program’s Volunteers Across America

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Improving water quality, enhancing the environment and bringing attention to Missouri’s important watersheds will be how Missouri’s AmeriCorps members will demonstrate the continuing impact that the program’s volunteers are having across America during AmeriCorps Week. The efforts, part of the event’s third annual observance celebrated May 9-16 nationwide, will also include AmeriCorps volunteers conducting water quality tests, removing invasive plant species and trash, and planting habitat-friendly native plant species at “Stream Team”- sponsored creeks and watersheds across the state.

AmeriCorps Week spotlights services provided by AmeriCorps Members, involves volunteers and motivates more Americans to serve their communities. A variety of creative events are being planned across the country showcasing the important contributions that AmeriCorps Members make each day in the areas of disaster relief, environmental improvements, low-income community support, health and education.

The Missouri Community Service Commission (MCSC), housed within the Missouri Department of Economic Development, serves as administrator for AmeriCorps funding in Missouri by awarding monetary grants and providing technical assistance and support. The MCSC is responsible for connecting Missourians of all backgrounds in an effort to improve unmet community needs through direct and tangible service.

“AmeriCorps members make a significant impact on Missouri’s ability to meet many local needs,” said Linda Thompson, executive director of the Missouri Community Service Commission. “AmeriCorps Week is a perfect opportunity to recognize their exceptional work.”

AmeriCorps is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent federal agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering.

Volunteers interested in participating in the cleanup effort should contact Steve Johnson at missouririver@gmail.com or at (573)256-2602.
