Prevent Child Abuse Iowa's AmeriCorps program will address the serious problem of child abuse, of which almost 12,500 Iowa children were victims in 2009. Child abuse has significant short and long-term adverse effects on its victims and results in large societal costs for its treatment and remediation. While harmful and expensive, abuse is preventable through the kind of community-based, family-strengthening efforts that this AmeriCorps program will support.
