The University of Louisville School of Public Health & Information Sciences is committed to matching up to a total of $5,000 of the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award for students admitted into public health degree programs. The University of Louisville (UofL), established in 1798, is a state-supported research university. In 1846 the Kentucky legislature created the University of Louisville proper, combining the Louisville Medical Institute, Louisville College, and a newly created law school. The university was a municipally supported institution until 1970, when it joined the state system of higher education. UofL has 12 schools and colleges offering 70 bachelor’s degrees, 79 master’s degrees, 36 doctoral degrees and three professional degrees. Located in Kentucky’s largest city, UofL is the major driver of Kentucky’s educational, social, health-care, cultural, and economic development. UofL has three campuses. The 287-acre Belknap Campus is three miles from downtown Louisville and houses eight of the university's 12 colleges and schools. The Health Sciences Center (HSC) is situated in downtown Louisville's medical complex and houses the university's health-related programs and the University of Louisville Hospital. UofL is known for excellence in educating students, creating new knowledge and making new discoveries. The university strives for and achieves transformational results that lead to a better quality of life for all Kentucky citizens. UofL works to prepare students to become critical thinkers that are involved in the cultural, social, and economic aspects of their communities. One of only 69 universities in the United States to achieve Carnegie Foundation Research 1 and Community Engagement Classifications, UofL also is ranked among the nation’s best universities for African-American and LGBTQ+ students. Our diverse student population makes for a great educational environment in which coursework is supplemented by what students learn from one another about different cultures and ethnicities, an important asset for thriving in today’s global economy. The university also drives economic development by providing an educated workforce and turning research innovations into commercially useful technologies. The University of Louisville is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate, bachelor, master, specialist, doctoral, and first-professional degrees (D.M.D., J.D., M.D.). In 1998, UofL established the Institute for Public Health Research to focus efforts on training the next generation of clinical researchers. The institute had a five-year NIH Clinical Research Curriculum (K30) Award and offered MSPH and PhD degrees in both Epidemiology–Clinical Investigation Sciences and Biostatistics–Decision Sciences. The School of Public Health and Information Sciences (SPHIS) was established in 2002 and remains the newest school at the university. The school’s leadership prioritized developing professional public health degree programs to complement the existing research-oriented masters and doctoral degrees. We offer a variety of Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral degrees. SPHIS obtained initial CEPH accreditation in 2007 and received reaccreditation in 2021 for a period of seven years.
