What is the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award?

AmeriCorps members are eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award after successfully completing your AmeriCorps term of service and enrolling in the Trust, you are eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. You can use the award to repay qualified student loans and to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs.

After I successfully complete my service term, how can I use my Segal AmeriCorps Education Award?

You can use it to pay education expenses at eligible post-secondary institutions, including many technical schools and G.I. Bill approved programs or to repay qualified student loans. Click here for more information.

I am nearing the end of my service term and want to begin looking for a job. Is there a job board I can use?

Yes, you can find a few job boards in the AmeriCorps alumni section.

What is an “Employer of National Service"?

There are over 600 employers of national service who value the skills of AmeriCorps alumni and show it by offering benefits in various forms. You can find more information here.

If I use the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is it taxed?

All payments made using the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award are subject to federal and possible state tax in the year each payment is made.

Do some schools match the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award?

Yes, AmeriCorps has a program called Schools of National Service in which colleges and universities commit to providing some benefits to AmeriCorps alumni who apply to and/or are admitted to their school. Sometimes a School of National Service will provide a 100% match to the Education Award, some offer partial match, and some offer other benefits like application fees waivers. Find out more here.

How do I apply for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program?

Under the Public Student Loan Forgiveness program, the US Department of Education forgives any outstanding balance and accrued interest on a borrower's direct loan or direct consolidation loan if you work for 10 years full-time at a nonprofit or government agency. You must also make 120 qualifying payments on the loan. Your AmeriCorps service year counts towards those 10 years if you make payments toward your loan during service. Submit your PSLF form to the AmeriCorps Hotline for completion. For security reasons, please do not include your social security number on the form.
