From forest fires and floods to hurricanes and tornadoes, to terror attacks and oil spills, AmeriCorps members have provided critical support to millions of Americans affected by disasters since 1994. AmeriCorps’ expertly trained Disaster Response Team serves in national disaster response efforts by supporting shelter operations, call centers, volunteer and donation management, muck and gut operations, blue-roof tarping and debris cleanup, among other services.

Following a disaster, national service acts as a force multiplier, providing key resources and significantly expanding the capacity of existing organizations on the ground. AmeriCorps programs like NCCC and FEMA Corps are often involved in disaster recovery for many months to years after the initial disaster, visit the NCCC deployment page for long-term recovery efforts.

Recent Disaster Response

AmeriCorps recently responded to the following disasters:

Hawaii Wildfires

On August 8, 2023, a series of wildfires broke out in Hawaii, predominantly on the island of Maui. The wind-driven fires prompted evacuations, caused widespread damage, and killed at least 115 people in the town of Lahaina, making this the deadliest wildfire in modern US history. On August 10, President Biden issued a federal major disaster declaration. AmeriCorps began serving in early September, supporting volunteer and donations management, and will remain on mission assignment as long as the need remains.

Super Typhoon Mawar

The strongest typhoon to hit the territory since 2002, Mawar made landfall on 5/24/23. As directed and in coordination with FEMA, AmeriCorps will be providing support staff to the IOF, and/or JFO to support ongoing disaster response operations in Guam. We plan to activate/deploy staff as early as this weekend. Close hold: This request comes ahead of a likely Direct Federal Assistance (DFA) request for members to support chainsaw/debris removal.
